In cooperation with Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is proudly announcing the return of former D&RGW steam Locomotive No. 340 to its rails for a brief series of trips into the Animas Canyon this June.
Loco. 340, operated by Ghost Town & Calico Railroad at Knott’s Berry Farm, arrived in Colorado via the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1881 as No. 400 for the Denver & Rio Grande Railway and served on the narrow-gauge line throughout the state until the early 1950s. It was constructed as a 2-8-0 or “Consolidation” type of wheel arrangement and was typical of late nineteenth century narrow gauge steam engines, with only three of this class remaining today. In the early 1950s, Walter Knott was purchasing outdated vintage railroad equipment from the Denver & Rio Grande Western and Rio Grande Southern railroads to serve as a centerpiece to his new Ghost Town & Calico Railroad at Knott’s. By 1952, Loco. 340 arrived to join other railroad equipment and became one of the jewels of Mr. Knott’s preservation and entertainment efforts. It was renumbered 40 for an extensive period and converted from coal to oil as a viable fuel source for its steam power, serving for over 70 years in Southern California. In 2024, 340 arrived back in its former home territory for major rebuilding in the shops of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, Colorado.
After these brief Colorado excursions, 340 will head back home to Buena Park to serve the guests of Knott’s Berry Farm for years to come.
Join us for limited seating on one of three trips planned for this rare railroad homecoming.
As an added feature, freshly rebuilt D&RGW coach/baggage 211 will be featured in the consist behind 340 courtesy of the Hinsdale County Historical Society. No. 211 is at the end of a full restoration of the 1881 car in the D&SNG Railroad shops and we are proud to have it visiting our narrow gauge rails. 211 will return to Hinsdale County for display in July of this year.

Light snacks and beverages will be available onboard, and the complement of cars will consist of our nineteenth century vintage coaches. Last Ride of the Season: October 26th
Due to significant recent weather events, The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad had a slide at milepost 486.0 just north of Needleton which resulted in the tracks being covered with rock and debris, making train passage to Silverton impossible. Due to this, we have had an interruption of service to Silverton and both Silverton trains have been rerouted to Cascade Canyon for tomorrow, July 3rd. resume service to Silverton on July 4th and will be communicating with guests if there is any change. Our maintenance of way crews are actively working to clear the slide and to restore the tracks.
We look forward to restoring full Silverton service on July3 3rd.

We are now operating daily and our train schedule has in fact expanded as we’ve moved deeper into the summer season.
We experienced a brief pause in railroad operations recently while we worked through communications with the Forest Service on our operating status while observing agreed upon fire precautions. Concurrently, we were able to rebook passengers to adjacent days when train excursions were operating.
All trains scheduled for Thursday, June 16 and beyond are operating as scheduled at this time.
Please know that if we experience any interruptions in service due to future fire precaution levels, we will reach out to all of our guests in a most timely manner to offer information and alternatives.
Thank you”
